Poás Volcano National Park
San Jose
One of Costa Rica's most-visited national parks, Poás Volcano is an active stratovolcano roughly an hour and a half from San José, known for its enormous crater and turquoise, acidic crater lake. A short, mostly paved trail leads from the parking area to the main lookout point, making it one of the more accessible volcano viewpoints in the country. The volcano occasionally has restricted or closed access during periods of higher activity, so conditions can vary by visit.
2
La Paz Waterfall Gardens
San Jose
A privately run ecological reserve in the Alajuela highlands, home to five waterfalls, cloud forest and rainforest trails, and a wildlife sanctuary with more than 100 animal species. Visitors can walk trails past the cascades, explore a butterfly observatory and hummingbird garden, and see rescued wildlife including monkeys, toucans, and big cats living in the park's care.
3
Teatro Nacional (National Theater)
San Jose
San José's ornate National Theater opened in 1897, built in a neoclassical style with funds partly raised through a national coffee export tax, reflecting how central coffee was to the country's development. It remains home to the National Symphony Orchestra and is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks on the Plaza de la Cultura, with a marble-and-gold interior that draws visitors even when no performance is on.
4
Irazú Volcano National Park
San Jose
At 3,432 meters (about 11,260 feet), Irazú is the highest volcano in Costa Rica, with a summit reached by paved road and a short walk to several craters, including one filled with a striking greenish-yellow lake. On exceptionally clear days, visitors have reported views stretching to both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea from the summit, though this depends heavily on weather. The park sits near the colonial city of Cartago, the country's former capital.
5
Sarchí
San Jose
A small town in Costa Rica's Central Valley, Sarchí is nationally famous as the birthplace of the hand-painted oxcart (carreta), a design so significant to Costa Rican identity that UNESCO has recognized it as part of the country's intangible cultural heritage. Family-run workshops still hand-paint carts in intricate geometric patterns, and the town displays what's said to be the world's largest oxcart alongside dozens of craft shops selling woodwork and other handmade goods.
