Sarchí's oxcart tradition grew out of a real logistical problem. Before roads or railways connected Costa Rica's Central Valley coffee highlands to the Pacific coast, growers had to move their harvest to the port of Puntarenas on a grueling trek of 10 to 15 days through jungle, swamp, and mountain terrain. The carreta — a wooden oxcart capable of hauling up to a ton of coffee — became essential to the entire export economy, and thousands were in use at the trade's peak. Sarchí, sitting in the Central Valley, became the hub where these carts were built and, eventually, elaborately hand-painted.
Two of the town's original family workshops are still active today: the Joaquín Chaverri Oxcart Factory, founded in 1902, and the Eloy Alfaro Oxcart Factory, established in 1923, both still turning out carts using largely hand-driven, near-machine-free methods. The oxherding and oxcart tradition itself was formally recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008, a reflection of how central this craft remains to Costa Rican identity well beyond its original, practical purpose.
Sarchí's town square is also home to a genuinely record-holding piece of this history: a Guinness World Record-certified oxcart, built in 2006, measuring 14 meters long and weighing about two tons — by far the largest oxcart on public display anywhere. Between the factory visits, the painted-cart tradition, and more than 200 local craft shops, the town offers a much deeper look at Costa Rican folk art than its size would suggest.
