Machu Picchu
Cusco
Machu Picchu is the 15th-century Inca citadel perched at roughly 7,970 feet (2,430 m) on a ridge above the Urubamba River, reached from Cusco by train to Aguas Calientes and then a shuttle bus up the mountain. Rediscovered for the outside world by Hiram Bingham in 1911 and named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, it remains Peru's most visited archaeological site and one of the New7Wonders of the World.
2
Sacsayhuamán
Cusco
Sacsayhuamán is a massive Inca fortress complex on a hill directly above Cusco, built from limestone blocks cut and fitted so precisely — some weighing over 100 tons — that no mortar was needed to hold them together. Its zigzagging walls, believed to have served both defensive and ceremonial purposes, are one of the finest surviving examples of Inca stonework and sit an easy short drive from Cusco's Plaza de Armas.
3
The Sacred Valley
Cusco
The Sacred Valley (Valle Sagrado) follows the Urubamba River northwest of Cusco through a string of Inca towns and ruins, including the hilltop terraces and market of Pisac and the still-inhabited fortress town of Ollantaytambo, the last functioning Inca administrative center. Lower in altitude and more fertile than Cusco, it was the breadbasket of the Inca Empire and today is the route most travelers pass through on the way to Machu Picchu.
4
Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)
Cusco
Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, is a peak around 17,100 feet (5,200 m) in the Cusco region whose mineral-streaked slopes — reds, golds, and lavenders from iron and other minerals — were only fully exposed within roughly the last decade as surrounding snow and ice retreated. Reaching the viewpoint means a genuine high-altitude hike from the trailhead near Cusipata, so acclimatizing in Cusco for a few days beforehand is strongly recommended.
5
Plaza de Armas
Cusco
Plaza de Armas is Cusco's historic main square, built by the Incas as the ceremonial heart of their empire (originally called Huacaypata) and rebuilt around it by the Spanish after the conquest — leaving stone Inca foundations beneath colonial arcades and two grand 17th-century churches, the Cusco Cathedral and the Church of the Society of Jesus, that still frame the plaza today.
