Day one's Cusco city tour covers two of the Inca Empire's most important real sites. Coricancha, the Temple of the Sun, was the most sacred site in Inca religion and effectively the symbolic center of the empire — chroniclers described its walls once lined with sheets of gold and its courtyards filled with life-sized gold and silver figures, before the Spanish built the Santo Domingo convent directly on top of its foundations after the conquest. Sacsayhuamán, the massive hilltop complex above the city, was built under the Inca ruler Pachacuti using stones weighing many tons, fitted together without mortar with a precision that still draws engineers and historians today; it also carries real, difficult history as the site of a decisive 1536 battle between Inca forces and Spanish conquistadors. Cusco itself was laid out to represent a puma, with Sacsayhuamán forming the head and Coricancha near the tail — a deliberate piece of Inca urban planning your guide can point out directly in the city's streets.
Day two's scenic train journey follows the Urubamba River from the Sacred Valley down toward the cloud forest, on either PeruRail or IncaRail depending on scheduling — a roughly 90-minute to two-hour ride that's genuinely part of the experience, not just a transfer, with the valley's terraced hillsides and the river itself visible the whole way. You arrive in Aguas Calientes, the small town built at the literal base of Machu Picchu mountain, for an overnight stay before the main event.
Day three's sunrise visit to Machu Picchu is timed to catch the citadel as the first light reaches it — a real, well-earned payoff for the early wake-up, since the ruins look genuinely different in that early light than they do once the day's crowds and full sun arrive. Your guide takes you through the site's real history and function in depth, not just a highlight-reel walkthrough. Since Machu Picchu's visitor system is organized around numbered circuits, this package books the classic Circuit 2 route where available, the most complete walk through the citadel's main urban sector.
This is a genuine 4-day, 3-night package rather than a single long day trip — the three nights of hotel accommodation, round-trip airport transfer, train tickets, and entrance fees are all bundled in, which is worth knowing if you're comparing it against piecing together the same Cusco-Sacred Valley-Machu Picchu route yourself.
