Huaca Pucllana
Lima
A pre-Inca adobe and clay pyramid complex built by the Lima Culture around 500 AD, standing directly in the middle of the modern Miraflores district. Excavations continue at the site today, and its museum displays ceramics and textiles recovered from the surrounding temple grounds.
2
Plaza Mayor de Lima
Lima
The colonial-era main square at the heart of Lima's historic center, part of the Historic Centre of Lima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (first inscribed in 1988 as the San Francisco convent ensemble and extended to the wider historic centre in 1991). It's surrounded by the Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace, and the Archbishop's Palace, and has served as the ceremonial and political heart of the city since its founding by Francisco Pizarro in 1535.
3
Larco Museum
Lima
One of Latin America's premier pre-Columbian art museums, housed in a restored 18th-century viceregal mansion built atop a 7th-century pre-Columbian pyramid. Its collection spans over 5,000 years and includes some 45,000 pre-Hispanic ceramics, textiles, and metalwork pieces, founded by Rafael Larco Hoyle in 1926.
4
Barranco's Bridge of Sighs
Lima
The Puente de los Suspiros is a wooden footbridge crossing a ravine in Barranco, Lima's bohemian former beach resort turned arts district. Local tradition holds that if you cross it while holding your breath and make a wish, it will come true — a small, genuine piece of neighborhood folklore in one of Lima's most colorful districts.
5
Parque del Amor (Love Park)
Lima
A clifftop park along Miraflores' Malecón, overlooking the Pacific Ocean on Lima's dramatic Costa Verde coastline. Its centerpiece is El Beso ('The Kiss'), a large mosaic sculpture by Peruvian artist Víctor Delfín, and the park's curving mosaic benches make it one of Lima's most photographed spots.
From roughly May to November, Lima sits under a persistent grey coastal fog called garúa, with cool temperatures and little to no rain. Summer (December-April) is warmer and sunnier — pack layers either way, since coastal Lima rarely gets genuinely hot.
Unlike Cusco, the Sacred Valley, or Machu Picchu, Lima sits at sea level, so altitude sickness isn't a factor for anything covered on this page — the one exception is the optional Marcahuasi day trip, which climbs to roughly 4,000 meters (about 13,000 feet).
Stick to bottled or purified water, and eat ceviche and other raw-fish dishes at reputable, high-turnover restaurants — Lima's best ceviche spots are usually only open for lunch, when the fish is freshest.
Lima's traffic can be heavy, especially between the historic center and Miraflores/Barranco during rush hour — private tours build in buffer time, but it's worth knowing if you're timing a return flight.
Tipping isn't as deeply embedded a custom as in the US, but it's appreciated for private guides and drivers — a modest tip for good service is standard practice.
Peru's currency is the sol (PEN). Cards are widely accepted in Miraflores and Barranco, but it's worth carrying small bills of soles for markets and smaller vendors.
Lima is Peru's sprawling coastal capital, a city of nearly 10 million people where colonial-era churches and balconied mansions sit a short drive from a pre-Inca pyramid still standing in the middle of a modern residential district. It's also, by wide consensus, South America's culinary capital — a fact felt directly in its ceviche stalls, its native-fruit markets, and a fine-dining scene that consistently ranks among the world's best.
The city itself splits into distinct, walkable pieces: the UNESCO-listed historic center (Cercado de Lima) with its colonial architecture and catacombs, the modern clifftop district of Miraflores overlooking the Pacific, and Barranco, a former 19th-century beach resort that's now Lima's bohemian arts neighborhood. Just beyond the city, the coast opens up into real day-trip territory — the pre-Columbian ruins of Pachacamac, and further south, the Ballestas Islands' wildlife and the Huacachina desert oasis.
Tell us your group size and dates — we'll take care of the rest.
