Rafael Larco Hoyle founded the museum in 1926, opening its doors on July 28 — Peru's Independence Day — in honor of his father, Rafael Larco Herrera, a Peruvian politician, businessman, and collector. The collection's roots go back a year earlier, to 1925, when Larco Herrera acquired roughly 600 ceramic pieces from a relative, Alfredo Hoyle, giving his son the seed collection he would spend the rest of his life expanding. In 1953, Larco Hoyle moved the growing museum to its current home in the Pueblo Libre district: an 18th-century former viceregal mansion that itself sits atop a smaller, 7th-century pre-Columbian pyramid, so visitors are effectively walking over one archaeological site to reach another.
Today the museum holds about 45,000 pre-Columbian objects spanning roughly 5,000 years and multiple pre-Hispanic cultures of Peru's coast and highlands — most notably Moche, Chimú, and Inca — including gold and silver metalwork, elaborate woven textiles, and one of the most complete ancient ceramic collections anywhere in the Americas.
Among its holdings is a dedicated, separately housed Erotic Gallery, one of the museum's most visited sections. Its pieces are mostly Moche ceramics (roughly 100-700 CE), made using a distinctive fine-line painting and sculptural technique, and they depict sexuality, fertility, and intimacy as a documented part of everyday and ceremonial life rather than a hidden or shameful subject. It's a genuinely unusual body of ancient art, and having a private guide walk you through it means real cultural context instead of being left to interpret 2,000-year-old pottery cold.
