The Fraser Valley at a glance

Facts about the eastern Fraser Valley. Where sources differ or are silent, the figure and its source are named.

Where
The Fraser Valley is a region of southwestern British Columbia along the Fraser River, from just west of Hope towards the Pacific. The Fraser Valley Regional District, which covers its eastern end, has six member municipalities (Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope, Kent and Mission) and says it serves just under 325,000 residents; its page gives no census year.
From Vancouver
Tourism Harrison says to allow 90 minutes by road from Vancouver to Harrison Hot Springs, and BC Parks calls Cultus Lake an hour and a half's drive from Vancouver. Neither source gives a time or distance for Chilliwack itself.
Fishing
White sturgeon angling on the Fraser River from Mission upstream is catch-and-release only and needs a White Sturgeon Conservation Licence on top of a basic freshwater licence (BC government, checked 26 October 2026).
Time zone
British Columbia has adopted permanent year-round Pacific time, seven hours behind UTC, and the provincial government says no clock change will be made on 1 November 2026.
Entering Canada
Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport but not to arrive by car, bus, train or boat, and US citizens do not need one but must carry identification such as a valid US passport (IRCC, checked 26 October 2026).
Emergencies
For an immediate threat to life or property, call 9-1-1 for police, fire or ambulance; Emergency Info BC lists active provincial emergencies such as wildfire evacuations.

How to get to the Fraser Valley and around it

Times come from the tourism boards and BC Parks, not from a route planner. Check road and transit conditions before you travel.

By road

Tourism Harrison says to allow 90 minutes from Vancouver to Harrison Hot Springs on Highway 1 east to exit 135, and 3 hours from Seattle (bring a passport or enhanced driver's licence). Tourism Chilliwack's driving directions from Vancouver to Luckakuck Way in Chilliwack use Highway 1 east and exit 116 (Lickman Road). BC Parks sends visitors to Bridal Veil Falls by exit 135 and to Cultus Lake by the Yarrow or Sardis exits.

By air

Tourism Harrison names the airports at Vancouver (2 hours from Harrison Hot Springs) and Abbotsford. Abbotsford International Airport's website listed WestJet and Flair Airlines and car rentals on 26 October 2026, but no drive time to Chilliwack.

By bus

BC Transit's 66 FVX (Fraser Valley Express) runs between Chilliwack and Lougheed Station in Burnaby, with service to Abbotsford and Langley's Carvolth Exchange, and Tourism Chilliwack lists three Chilliwack stops, including the Downtown Chilliwack Bus Exchange. For Harrison, Tourism Harrison says to transfer in Chilliwack to the Agassiz Harrison Connector; BC Transit's Chilliwack route list shows the Harrison bus as route 71 (Agassiz-Harrison), where Tourism Harrison's page says route 11, so check the number. Adult fares (ages 19 to 64) on BC Transit's Chilliwack page on 26 October 2026: CAD 2.50 for a single ride and CAD 5 for an FVX single ride.

To the parks, and parking

The BC Parks pages for Bridal Veil Falls and Cultus Lake give road directions and no bus route. BC Parks has had an advisory since 27 June 2022 that illegally parked vehicles at Bridal Veil Falls Park will be towed, so use the designated lots. On the Voyzo private fishing charter, a private vehicle and driver collect your group at your accommodation, according to the tour page.

Fares are BC Transit's adult fares as shown on its Chilliwack fares page, which states no currency or effective date. Timetables change, so check the current 66 FVX and route 71 timetables on bctransit.com before you travel.

One day in the Fraser Valley, and a second day

A plan built mainly from the four places on this page, with two further-afield ideas for a second day. Hours and seasons change, so check each stop first.

  1. If you book the fishing charterThe private fishing charter takes 8 to 10 hours, so treat it as the whole day. A private vehicle and driver bring your group from your accommodation to the boat launch near Chilliwack and back, according to the tour page.
  2. Day 1, morningBridal Veil Falls: take exit 135 off Highway 1, 16 km east of Chilliwack. BC Parks describes a loop trail of about half an hour return to the viewing platform. Park only in the designated lots.
  3. Day 1, middayFrom exit 135 follow the signs to Harrison Hot Springs, the route Tourism Harrison gives from Highway 1. The indoor Harrison Mineral Baths are open to all visitors; phone the resort for hours. Sasquatch Provincial Park lies 6 km north of the village.
  4. Day 1, afternoon or Day 2Cultus Lake Provincial Park is 11 km southwest of Chilliwack. Swim only in the buoyed areas, as no lifeguards are on duty, and read BC Parks' advisory about eroded trail edges before you walk.
  5. Day 2Spend a day on the Fraser River near Chilliwack, where the private fishing charter runs. Further afield, Fort Langley National Historic Site is open seven days a week from 10 am to 4:30 pm, with its bastions and upper gallery closed for conservation (Parks Canada, checked 26 October 2026). BC Parks describes the trail through the Othello Tunnels at Coquihalla Canyon Park, north of Hope, as an easy 3.5 km round trip, but its advisory dated 16 May 2026, still listed on 26 October 2026, says the Kettle Valley Railway trail is open only from the parking lot to the start of tunnel 5 and closed beyond that until further notice, so check before you go.

Fishing the Fraser: rules to know before you book

Rules checked on the BC government and Fisheries and Oceans Canada pages on 26 October 2026. Regulations change, and this is not legal advice.

Freshwater licences

You must hold a valid freshwater licence to fish for any species in BC's non-tidal waters. Anglers aged 16 or older generally need a basic licence (the BC government lists exceptions); B.C. residents under 16 need none, and non-residents under 16 may fish without one if accompanied by a licence holder aged 16 or older. Licences are sold online in WILD or in person, as one-day, eight-day or annual (1 April to 31 March) licences.

White sturgeon

From the CPR Bridge at Mission to and including the Williams Lake River, you must hold a White Sturgeon Conservation Licence as well as your basic licence to fish for white sturgeon, and all sturgeon must be released. That range covers the river upstream of Mission, including the Chilliwack stretch. For 15 May to 31 July, the BC government's Region 2 update lists seven voluntary and three mandatory angling closure areas between the Harrison River confluence and just upstream of Hope, set up to protect confirmed spawning areas; the document carries no date, so confirm the current closure areas with the BC government before you fish.

Salmon and steelhead

BC's freshwater synopsis excludes salmon fishing. Fisheries and Oceans Canada publishes fishery notices at notices.dfo-mpo.gc.ca, and this page cannot promise that a salmon opening applies on your date. A BC Region 2 notice effective 16 September 2025 says no fishing for steelhead on the Fraser River mainstem downstream of Spuzzum Creek from 15 August to 31 December; check the current regional page for this year's dates.

What the tour page says

The tour page describes a private boat and guide, all fishing equipment, a fully licensed and insured local outfitter and catch-and-release sturgeon fishing. It does not say whether anglers' licences are included, so ask when you request your quote.

The 2025–2027 BC freshwater regulations guide is the source for the licence and sturgeon rules; the BC regulations page was last updated on 26 August 2026.

Questions, answered

The Fraser Valley: your questions answered

Short answers, checked against official sources where they publish a figure, on 26 October 2026.

Still deciding?

Tell us your date, group size and what you want to see. The Voyzo team replies by email with the tour that fits and the price for your group.

Where is the Fraser Valley and what does this page cover?

The Fraser Valley is a region of southwestern British Columbia along the Fraser River, and the Fraser Valley Regional District, which covers its eastern end, has six member municipalities: Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Hope, Kent and Mission. This page covers the eastern end around Chilliwack, where Voyzo has guides to the Fraser River, Bridal Veil Falls, Cultus Lake and Harrison Hot Springs and one tour.

How far is the Fraser Valley from Vancouver?

Tourism Harrison says to allow 90 minutes to drive from Vancouver to Harrison Hot Springs on Highway 1 east to exit 135, and BC Parks calls Cultus Lake an hour and a half's drive from Vancouver. Neither source gives a time for Chilliwack itself.

What is the best time to visit the Fraser Valley?

July and August are the warmest and driest months at Agassiz in Environment Canada's 1991–2020 normals, with average highs of about 25 °C and 55 to 69 mm of precipitation a month; November is the wettest month at 267.8 mm. Season of the Wild brings salmon and eagles to the Harrison River Valley from October to January.

Can I reach the Fraser Valley without a car?

Partly. BC Transit's 66 FVX runs between Chilliwack and Lougheed Station in Burnaby, with service to Abbotsford and Langley's Carvolth Exchange, and Tourism Harrison says to transfer in Chilliwack to the Agassiz Harrison Connector for Harrison (BC Transit lists that bus as route 71). BC Transit's adult fares on 26 October 2026 were CAD 2.50 for a single ride and CAD 5 for an FVX single ride. The BC Parks pages for the parks give road directions only. On the Voyzo private fishing charter a private vehicle and driver collect you at your accommodation.

Can you keep the sturgeon you catch on the Fraser River?

No. The BC freshwater fishing regulations guide says white sturgeon fishing in the Fraser River watershed from the CPR Bridge at Mission upstream is a catch-and-release only fishery and that all sturgeon must be released. You must also hold a White Sturgeon Conservation Licence on top of your basic licence. Checked 26 October 2026.

Do I need a fishing licence for a Fraser River charter?

BC requires a valid freshwater licence to fish for any species in non-tidal waters. Anglers aged 16 or older generally need a basic licence (the BC government lists exceptions), and white sturgeon anglers also need a White Sturgeon Conservation Licence. Voyzo's private fishing charter page does not say whether licences are included, so ask when you request your quote.

Is Bridal Veil Falls open in winter?

BC Parks' web page for Bridal Veil Falls Park gives no hours or closing date. Its operating-dates data lists the park gate period as 1 April to 31 October in both 2026 and 2027, so winter access is not confirmed: check BC Parks before you go. BC Parks also warns that in colder winters the falls freeze into an unstable ice wall and the base is extremely hazardous.

Is it safe to swim at Cultus Lake?

BC Parks says to swim only within the buoyed swimming areas, that no lifeguards are on duty, that the shore drops off suddenly and that swimmer's itch may be present. On 26 October 2026 BC Parks also still listed a December 2025 advisory that trails and stream banks were affected by flooding and wind.

Can anyone use the hot springs at Harrison Hot Springs?

Tourism Harrison says the Harrison Mineral Baths, an indoor public pool at 38 °C, are open to all visitors and residents of the area; its page lists no hours, so phone the resort first. The resort's five mineral pools are reached with wristbands issued to registered guests, and no natural outdoor hot spring is open to the public in the village. Checked 26 October 2026.

What events are on in the Fraser Valley in 2026–27?

Season of the Wild runs from October to January in the Harrison River Valley, with salmon, bald eagles and events such as Taste the Wild at Kilby Historic Site on November weekends. The 48th Harrison Festival of the Arts runs 9 to 18 July 2027 in Harrison Hot Springs. Tourism Chilliwack's event directory listed events only through 1 November 2026 when checked on 26 October 2026.

Do I need a passport or an eTA to visit the Fraser Valley?

Only if you are entering Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA to fly into Canada but not to arrive by car, bus, train or boat, and that US citizens do not need an eTA but must carry identification such as a valid US passport. Rules checked 26 October 2026.

What does Voyzo's Fraser Valley fishing charter include and what does it cost?

About

About the Fraser Valley

Around Chilliwack and Harrison Hot Springs, BC Parks lists Bridal Veil Falls Park, Cultus Lake Park and Sasquatch Park under its Lower Mainland region, and Tourism Harrison promotes a Season of the Wild from October to January, when salmon return and bald eagles gather in the Harrison River Valley. BC Parks says provincial parks in the Fraser Valley have seen exceptional growth in visitor numbers, leading to parking congestion, and its advisory says illegally parked vehicles at Bridal Veil Falls Park will be towed.

Voyzo's Fraser Valley tour is one private fishing charter. According to its tour page, the boat and guide are for your group only for the day, all fishing equipment is included, and a private vehicle and driver collect your group from your Fraser Valley accommodation. Which licences you need and which fish are open on your date follow the BC fishing rules summarised above and Fisheries and Oceans Canada's fishery notices, so ask what the price includes before you book.
