White sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in North America and can live around a century, a lineage that goes back some 200 million years. The Fraser River, which runs through the Chilliwack area, holds one of the continent's best-known populations, and the fishery draws anglers from well beyond British Columbia.
Because the species is considered at risk in British Columbia, sturgeon fishing on the Fraser is strictly catch-and-release. Guides handle the fish carefully, often measuring and tagging before release, and published data cited by local guides put mortality from catch-and-release at very low levels.
Fish of extraordinary size are caught here: the area has produced reported records for rod-and-reel white sturgeon, including fish estimated at more than 1,000 pounds, though you should treat the size of your own catch as a bonus rather than an expectation. Salmon runs on the same river add variety through the seasons.
