Revelstoke Mountain Resort is a ski and mountain-activity resort on Mount Mackenzie, just outside the town of Revelstoke in the Columbia Mountains of interior British Columbia. It is best known for a vertical drop of 1,713 metres (5,620 feet), which the resort describes as the most vertical in North America and Wikipedia describes as the longest vertical descent of any ski resort on the continent. The resort opened in December 2007 and is owned by Northland Properties.
Skiing on Mount Mackenzie began in the 1960s with a small rope tow, and by 1969 local skiing was concentrated there. Sources differ on the exact date of the first public opening. The hill later ran into financial trouble and went through a period of local society operation. A plan for a much larger resort emerged in the early 2000s, with an agreement signed in March 2005 and construction under way from late 2005. The resort opened on 21 December 2007 with a gondola and The Stoke chair. North Bowl runs and The Ripper chair followed in 2008, and an upper gondola section extended the lift-served vertical to 1,713 metres, according to the resort.
The base sits at about 510 metres and the top lift-served elevation is about 2,200 metres. Wikipedia lists roughly 40 designated trails, with a small share of beginner terrain and the majority classed as intermediate or expert; the longest run, Last Spike, is about 15 kilometres. The resort cites annual snowfall of around 10.5 metres, and the area is known for deep powder. Cat-skiing and heli-skiing operate on neighbouring terrain. Current terrain and lift counts change as the resort expands, so check the operator. Plans call for expansion to up to 25 lifts over time.
The resort has pushed into year-round use. A mountain coaster, The Pipe, opened in 2016, running about 1.4 kilometres from Revelation Lodge to the village plaza, and a second track was added in 2023. The upper gondola opened to summer visitors for hiking and sightseeing in 2017, and a disc-golf course was built in 2016. Annual freeskiing events include the Canadian Championships of the Freeskiing World Tour, held since 2009-10.
Mount Revelstoke National Park, which protects a separate stretch of wilderness with the Meadows in the Sky Parkway, is a short drive away. The Revelstoke Railway Museum is in town, and the town itself has the heritage buildings of an old Canadian Pacific Railway division point.
