Rwanda is a small, landlocked country in East Africa known as the "land of a thousand hills" for its steep, terraced, densely populated highland terrain. It's one of the most densely populated countries in Africa, with a population of roughly 13 million, and has rebuilt itself in the three decades since the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi into one of the continent's cleanest and fastest-developing economies — Kigali, the capital, is regularly cited as one of Africa's most orderly cities, helped in part by a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags in place since 2008. Kinyarwanda, French, English, and Swahili are all official languages, and the currency is the Rwandan franc.

June through September and December through February are Rwanda's two dry seasons and the best windows for gorilla trekking, since trails through the volcanic forest are less muddy; trekking runs year-round, but the wetter months (March-May, October-November) mean tougher underfoot conditions.
Most visitors arrive through Kigali International Airport. The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park takes roughly 2-3 hours on paved roads, while reaching Akagera in the east or crossing into Uganda involves longer, sometimes unpaved stretches — a private driver-guide is the standard way to cover this.
Rwanda offers visa-on-arrival or e-visa access to citizens of essentially all nationalities, and it's one of three countries (with Kenya and Uganda) covered by a single East Africa Tourist Visa, which is useful if your trip crosses into Uganda's national parks as most Voyzo Rwanda routes do.
Kigali and the lower elevations stay warm year-round, but Volcanoes National Park sits at altitude and can be cool and misty — pack layers, a rain jacket, and sturdy hiking boots or shoes with ankle support for trekking through volcanic forest terrain.
Rwanda uses the Rwandan franc (RWF), though US dollars are widely accepted for gorilla permits and larger purchases; tipping trekking guides and porters is customary given the physical demands of their work.
