Getting to and around Calgary

Distances and fares come from the named sources, and fares were checked on 26 October 2026. Traffic and weather change drive times, especially in winter.

From the airport by bus

Calgary Transit's Route 500 Airport Express runs between downtown and the airport via Centre Street with limited stops. It was called Route 300 until a rename announced on 31 August 2026, which changed neither its routing nor its service. At the Domestic Terminal it boards at Door 2 toward Pillar 7, and at the International Terminal at Door 15 on the Arrivals Level.

From the airport by taxi or ride-share

The airport authority gives the approximate metered taxi fare to downtown as CAD 40 to CAD 45 in normal conditions, and a sedan flat rate of CAD 68.75 plus an Airport Access Fee of CAD 11 per pick-up (checked 26 October 2026). Tourism Calgary says Uber operates in Calgary, including at the airport.

By road to Banff

Parks Canada puts Banff National Park 128 km west of Calgary, with the airport about 144 km east of the park. It lists transit, shuttles, guided tours with licensed commercial operators, chartered buses and carpooling as ways to travel between Calgary and Banff.

By road to Waterton, Drumheller and Edmonton

Parks Canada gives the drive to the Waterton townsite as 271 km. Travel Drumheller gives the drive to Drumheller as about 90 minutes, and Alberta Parks says Dinosaur Provincial Park is approximately a two-hour drive from Drumheller (Travel Drumheller gives 170 km). Edmonton is a 3-hour drive north, according to Tourism Calgary.

Around the city by transit

Tourism Calgary describes Calgary's transit network as buses and two CTrain (light rail) lines. Calgary Transit's 2026 adult fares, checked 26 October 2026, are CAD 4.00 for a single ride valid 90 minutes and CAD 12.65 for a day pass. Tourism Calgary says the CTrain is free between City Hall Station and Downtown West/Kerby Station, with proof of fare needed once a train leaves the 7th Avenue Free Fare Zone.

On foot, by bike and by car

Tourism Calgary calls the downtown core very walkable, and the City's Plus 15 walkways and pathways are two networks for getting around on foot. Tourism Calgary also says parking in the downtown core is paid, but street parking is free after 6 p.m., on Sundays and on designated holidays.

The airport-to-downtown distance was not found on an official page. The Calgary-to-Drumheller time is Travel Drumheller's figure; no road distance is given.

Where the stops are

The parts of Calgary these tours and attraction guides use, from the City's and the places' own pages and the tour records.

Downtown core

The Calgary Tower stands at 101 9 Avenue SW, and the Plus 15 walkways run above street level through downtown. The City says the renovated block of Stephen Avenue between 1 Street SE and Centre Street is complete. Arts Commons and the Wonderland sculpture are stops on the downtown walking tour.

Eau Claire and Prince's Island

Prince's Island Park is at 4 St. and 1 Ave. S.W. and has a full-service restaurant, the River Café, which is closed each January. The City's park page also points to Eau Claire area improvement works with detours.

East Village and the confluence

Studio Bell is in East Village, a five-floor building that opened on Canada Day 2016. The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland, a National Historic Site at 750 9 Avenue SE, marks where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet.

Stampede Park

Stampede Park, at 650 25 Ave SE, hosts the Cenovus Energy Grey Cup Festival from 11 to 14 November 2026. The Calgary Stampede's next dates are 9–18 July 2027.

Heritage Park and the Glenmore Reservoir

Heritage Park says it sits on 127 acres on the banks of the Glenmore Reservoir, at 1900 Heritage Dr. S.W., and lists Calgary Transit's Route 402 from Heritage CTrain Station (operating May through October) among the routes that reach it.

The Barley Belt

A cluster of craft breweries in Calgary's southeast. LiveWire Calgary described it in June 2018 as the area between 34 and 46 Avenues and 1 and 11 Streets (the Manchester Industrial, Highfield and Alyth-Bonnybrook areas). Barley Belt began as a collective brand; CBC reported in February 2020 that the trademark had gone to Labatt with its purchase of Banded Peak (Labatt called this temporary) and that some breweries would stop using the name, so check the tour page for the stops.

Sources: City of Calgary: Stephen Avenue; City of Calgary: Prince's Island Park; The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland; Tourism Calgary: Grey Cup Festival; City of Calgary: Plus 15 network; LiveWire Calgary: Calgary's Barley Belt (June 2018); CBC News: Battle brews over 'Barley Belt' trademark (February 2020); Studio Bell: our story; Heritage Park: getting to Heritage Park; Calgary Tower: hours and address.

Day trips from Calgary: Banff, the Badlands and Waterton

Park rules, fees and closures are Parks Canada's and the places' own, checked 26 October 2026 and subject to change. When you request a quote, ask which stops are open on your date.

Banff and Lake Louise

Banff National Park is 128 km west of Calgary. Parks Canada lists adult daily admission at CAD 12.25, a family or group rate of CAD 24.50 for up to seven people in one vehicle and a commercial group rate of CAD 10.42 per person (checked 26 October 2026). Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles all year, with access limited to Parks Canada shuttles, commercial operators with a Moraine Lake Road licence and Moraine Lake Lodge guests, and the 2026 shuttles ended on 12 October. The Johnston Canyon Trail and Day Use Area is closed from 13 October to 11 December 2026 for construction. The Banff Gondola lists 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily to 19 November, then 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to 31 December 2026. Voyzo's 2-day private tour includes Lake Louise, Johnston Canyon and a gondola ride on day one.

Drumheller and the Badlands

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is 6 km northwest of Drumheller. From 1 September to 14 May it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Mondays except holiday Mondays); from 15 May to 31 August it is open daily, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Adult admission is CAD 25.00, tax included (checked 26 October 2026). Travel Drumheller places the Hoodoos about 16 km from its Visitor Information Centre, says the attraction it calls the World's Largest Dinosaur, Tyra, has 106 stairs inside to a viewing platform in its mouth, and says Wayne, sometimes called a ghost town, is reached by Highway 10 east and then Highway 10X across the 11 Bridges. Voyzo's Drumheller tour and Badlands tour cover Drumheller; the 2-day tour adds Wayne.

Waterton Lakes National Park

The townsite is 271 km from Calgary by road. Parks Canada says the park is open year round, but from November to April most townsite facilities are closed, and Parks Canada names Pincher Creek and Mountain View as the closest fuel stations outside the park, open year-round. Red Rock Parkway, which leads to Red Rock Canyon, is open from early May to November. Akamina Parkway is open year-round but reaches only Little Prairie in winter. The Prince of Wales Hotel says its 2026 season has closed and it reopens on 10 May 2027. Daily park admission is CAD 12.25 for an adult (checked 26 October 2026). Voyzo's Waterton day trip lists Red Rock Canyon and the hotel as stops.

Fossils and Dinosaur Provincial Park

The Royal Tyrrell Museum describes itself as Canada's only museum dedicated exclusively to the study of ancient life. It says Alberta's Historical Resources Act protects fossils, that violations are punishable by fines of up to CAD 50,000 and/or one year in prison, that it is unlawful to excavate fossils, and that fossils cannot be collected in any provincial or national park or protected area; its advice is to photograph a find, note where it is, leave it buried and report it. Horsethief Canyon is a viewpoint only, because Travel Drumheller says hiking into it is not permitted on private property. Alberta Parks says Dinosaur Provincial Park is 48 km northeast of Brooks and approximately a two-hour drive from Drumheller. The fossil expedition is a Voyzo tour built around identification.

Travel Drumheller gives the drive from Calgary as about 90 minutes; no road distance is given here.

Check three closures first. Parks Canada has closed the Johnston Canyon Trail and Day Use Area from 13 October to 11 December 2026 for construction. Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles all year, and the 2026 Lake Louise and Moraine Lake shuttles ended on 12 October. The Banff Gondola lists 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily to 19 November, then 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. to 31 December 2026. Park entry is CAD 12.25 for an adult per day (checked 26 October 2026).

Can I drive to Moraine Lake?

Not in your own vehicle. A Parks Canada order in force since 1 April 2026, until further notice, restricts motor vehicles on Moraine Lake Road to Parks Canada shuttles, commercial operators with a Moraine Lake Road licence, Moraine Lake Lodge guests, staff and contractors, and emergency services. Parks Canada's visitor page says the road is closed to personal vehicles year-round. In 2026 the Moraine Lake shuttle ran from 1 June to 12 October (weather permitting), every shuttle needed a reservation, and a shuttle ticket did not include the park entry fee.

How far is Drumheller from Calgary, and what is there to see?

Travel Drumheller gives the drive from Calgary as about 90 minutes. The Royal Tyrrell Museum is 6 km northwest of the town; Travel Drumheller places the Hoodoos about 16 km from its Visitor Information Centre and says the attraction it calls the World's Largest Dinosaur has 106 stairs inside to a viewing platform in its mouth. Voyzo's Drumheller tour and Badlands tour start in Calgary.

Is the Royal Tyrrell Museum open on Mondays?

Not in the shorter season. From 1 September to 14 May it is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Mondays except holiday Mondays; from 15 May to 31 August it is open daily, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed on 21, 24, 25 and 28 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. Adult admission is CAD 25.00, tax included (checked 26 October 2026). The museum describes itself as Canada's only museum dedicated exclusively to the study of ancient life.

Can I keep a fossil I find in the Alberta Badlands?

Not freely. The Royal Tyrrell Museum says Alberta's Historical Resources Act protects fossils, that violations are punishable by fines of up to CAD 50,000 and/or one year in prison (Travel Drumheller gives the same penalty), and that it is unlawful to excavate fossils. Its advice is to photograph a find, note where it is, leave it buried and report it to the museum. It also says fossils cannot be collected in any provincial or national park or protected area, that surface collecting is allowed only on provincial Crown land or on private land with the owner's permission, and that a legally collected surface fossil can be kept only as custodian because ownership stays with the Province of Alberta. Horsethief Canyon is a viewpoint only, because Travel Drumheller says hiking into it is not permitted on private property. See the fossil expedition.

Is Waterton Lakes National Park open in winter, and how far is it from Calgary?

The park is open year round and the townsite is 271 km from Calgary by road, according to Parks Canada. From November to April most townsite facilities are closed, and Parks Canada names Pincher Creek and Mountain View as the closest fuel stations outside the park, open year-round. Red Rock Parkway is open from early May to November; Akamina Parkway, open all year, reaches only Little Prairie in winter. The Prince of Wales Hotel says it reopens on 10 May 2027. See the Waterton day trip.

Do I need a passport or visa to visit Calgary?

That depends on your passport, and this page is not legal advice. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA (CAD 7) to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport but not when they arrive by car, bus, train or boat, and that U.S. citizens are exempt from the eTA but must carry proper identification. Check the IRCC eTA page before you travel (read 26 October 2026).

What taxes apply in Calgary?

Tourism Calgary says a 5 per cent GST applies to most goods and services and that Alberta has no provincial sales tax. Alberta.ca says the provincial tourism levy on accommodation is 6% of the purchase price for stays booked after 31 March 2026; a Tourism Calgary page still showed 4% when checked. Tourism Calgary also says tipping about 15 to 20 per cent of the pre-tax bill is customary in restaurants.

Is Fort Calgary still called Fort Calgary?

The site is now run by The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland: the Fort Calgary Preservation Society changed its name on 2 May 2024. The organisation says the North-West Mounted Police established the fort in 1875 and that Fort Calgary operated there for 39 years, and that Indigenous presence at the site dates back to approximately 10,000 BC. It is a National Historic Site at 750 9 Avenue SE, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voyzo's private city tour still lists Fort Calgary as a stop.

About

About Calgary

The Bow and Elbow rivers meet in Calgary, at a place where, according to The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland, Indigenous presence dates back to approximately 10,000 BC. The North-West Mounted Police established a fort there in 1875, and the organisation that runs the site, formerly the Fort Calgary Preservation Society, took its present name on 2 May 2024. Voyzo's tour pages may still call the site Fort Calgary.

Calgary is also a starting point for trips into the Rockies: Parks Canada says Calgary International Airport is the closest airport to Banff National Park, which lies 128 km to the west, and it lists guided tours, shuttles and transit as ways to make the trip. The city itself had 1,306,780 residents at the 2021 census, according to the City of Calgary.

Voyzo's Calgary tours are all private. The city tours cover downtown landmarks, local history and the craft breweries; the day trips go to the Alberta Badlands around Drumheller and to Waterton Lakes National Park, and a two-day tour adds Banff. Park passes, museum admission, gondola tickets and similar entry fees are set by the places themselves and follow their own seasons and weather; each tour page says what is included.
