Alberta treats fossils as protected historical resources, which is why access to dig and survey sites is so tightly controlled. Collectors normally need written government permission, and only a few fossil types such as ammonites and petrified wood can ever be owned by private people through a disposition certificate from the Royal Tyrrell Museum.
The Red Deer River valley is the core of this fossil country: Joseph B. Tyrrell found the skull later named Albertosaurus here, and the Royal Tyrrell Museum opened in 1985 to research and display the finds. Learning from field professionals what a bone fragment looks like in the rock is a different experience from reading a museum label.
