Montenegro is a small Balkan country on the Adriatic coast — around 620,000 people in a territory smaller than Connecticut — that became independent from the state union with Serbia in a 2006 referendum. The coast (Kotor, Budva, Herceg Novi) is compact and easy to combine in a day, but Durmitor and the mountainous interior are a genuinely different driving pace on winding roads — a private driver is the practical way to link both.
The coast has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers; Durmitor and the interior are alpine and considerably cooler, with snow into late spring at higher elevations — pack layers if combining both.
