Winnipeg tours and things to do

Winnipeg is the capital of Manitoba, a city of 843,600 people (City of Winnipeg, 2024, via Tourism Winnipeg) where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet. Voyzo lists 3 private day tours from Winnipeg, to Lake Winnipeg's Elk Island and Grand Beach, the Winnipeg River's hydro-electric sites and the Narcisse Snake Dens, each priced by quote. All three leave the city; the sights in town, from The Forks to the Exchange District, are covered in the guide below. Winters are cold (January daily average −16.3 °C, Environment and Climate Change Canada 1991–2020), and Travel Manitoba says the Narcisse snakes emerge in the first two weeks of May and return to their dens in early September, staying visible until cool weather sends them underground.

Getting to and around Winnipeg

Journey times are the operators' and the tourism board's published figures, read on 26 October 2026. Schedules change; check before you travel.

By air

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is at 2000 Wellington Avenue. Tourism Winnipeg lists air times of 1 hour 19 minutes from Minneapolis, 2 hours 17 minutes from Toronto and 2 hours 55 minutes from Vancouver. Check the airport's own page for ground transport to downtown.

VIA Rail's Winnipeg station is at 123 Main Street. VIA lists Toronto to Winnipeg at 1,897 km, an average of 1 day 10 hours 35 minutes, with 2 departures a week, and Winnipeg to Vancouver at 2,496 km, 2 days 12 hours 30 minutes. The station's ticket office is closed on Friday and Saturday.

By road and bus

Tourism Winnipeg says the city is about one hour north of the US border crossing at Pembina, North Dakota, and that the No. 1 Trans-Canada Highway (east-west) connects it directly with Canada's major urban centres. Travel Manitoba says several bus lines and local companies offer transportation to and from Winnipeg and dozens of other Manitoba destinations; check each operator for its current stop. Manitoba Parks tells park visitors to check manitoba511.ca or call 5-1-1 for road conditions before travelling (notice dated 25 September 2026).

City buses

Winnipeg Transit says its network changed in 2025 and recommends its Navigo trip planner. The 2026 full cash fare is $3.45 and a peggo 24-hour e-pass at the full fare is $11.45; children 11 and under ride free with a fare-paying customer (Canadian dollars, checked 26 October 2026).

Parking and driving

Tourism Winnipeg says city metered parking applies Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and that you often will not find a meter to pay with, as payment is directed to PayByPhone; free two-hour parking is available downtown where signed. Right turns on red are allowed unless posted.

Day trips from Winnipeg: seasons, distances and park rules

Distances and directions are as Manitoba Parks gives them, not tour times. Seasons and rules are from Manitoba Parks and Travel Manitoba, read on 26 October 2026.

Grand Beach

Manitoba Parks gives the route as PTH 59 north for 80 km, then PTH 12 west for 6 km, and describes dunes 12 metres high on Lake Winnipeg, which it calls the sixth largest lake in Canada. The Elk Island tour includes a stop here.

Elk Island Provincial Park

Manitoba Parks describes it as about 900 hectares, 32 km north of Grand Beach and 1.2 km from the mainland, accessible only by boat, with no camping or open fires on the island. The tour page describes the route; we confirm how your day is run when we quote.

Winnipeg River hydro sites

Manitoba Parks calls Pinawa Dam Provincial Heritage Park (97 km from Winnipeg by its directions) Manitoba's first hydro-electric generating station: it began delivering power in 1906 and closed in 1951 so the river's full flow could serve Seven Sisters downstream. Whitemouth Falls Provincial Park is 90 km north-east of Winnipeg, where the Whitemouth and Winnipeg rivers meet. See the Winnipeg River tour.

Narcisse Snake Dens

Travel Manitoba places the Narcisse Wildlife Management Area on PTH 17, about 6 km north of Narcisse, and says tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes emerge in the first two weeks of May and return to their dens in early September, staying visible until cool weather sends them underground. Travel Manitoba calls the dens the world's largest concentration of red-sided garter snakes. The tour page says the dens are most active in May and September.

Provincial park permits

Manitoba Parks requires a valid park vehicle permit on motor vehicles in provincial parks. The 2026 daily permit is $9.50 including GST (Canadian dollars, checked 26 October 2026); none is needed on foot or by bicycle, and 1 to 28 February 2027 is listed as free. Ask us in your request whether a permit is covered.

Churchill is not a day trip

VIA Rail lists Winnipeg to Churchill at 1,694 km, an average of 1 day 20 hours 55 minutes, with 2 departures a week. Travel Manitoba says polar bear tours there run October to November, with some summer viewing in July and August. Voyzo lists no tours in Churchill.

Questions, answered

Winnipeg: your questions answered

Short answers, checked against official sources where they publish a figure, on 26 October 2026.

Still deciding?

Tell us your date, group size and what you want to see. The Voyzo team replies by email with the tour that fits and the price for your group.

What are the main things to do in Winnipeg?

Five sights anchor a visit: The Forks, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, the Exchange District, Saint-Boniface and Assiniboine Park with its zoo, The Leaf and Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. Voyzo's three private tours all leave the city, to Lake Winnipeg, the Winnipeg River and the Narcisse Snake Dens.

What is the best time to visit Winnipeg?

Summer is the warmest period: the 1991–2020 normals give daily highs of 23.3 °C in June, 25.8 °C in July and 25.4 °C in August, and the Winnipeg Folk Festival announces 8 to 11 July 2027. Winters are cold, with a January daily average of −16.3 °C; Festival du Voyageur is held in February (13 to 22 February in 2026; 2027 dates not found on 26 October 2026).

How cold does Winnipeg get in winter?

The 1991–2020 normals for the airport station give a January daily maximum of −11.4 °C and a minimum of −21.2 °C, with 25.0 cm of snowfall in the month and 19 cm of snow on the ground at month-end. In its 1938–2020 record the station's low is −45.0 °C, on 18 February 1966.

How many days do you need in Winnipeg?

In the plan above, one day covers The Forks, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Saint-Boniface and the Exchange District, and Assiniboine Park is a separate half day. Each of Voyzo's three Winnipeg tours takes a full day (8 hours as listed), so count one more day for each trip out of the city.

Is the Canadian Museum for Human Rights open on Mondays?

No. The museum's site, read on 26 October 2026, lists opening Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closing on Mondays. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month, and the adult price for ages 18 to 64 is shown as $23 (the page does not name the currency).

How do I get from the airport to downtown Winnipeg?

Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is at 2000 Wellington Avenue. Tourism Winnipeg says taxi and rental-car pick-ups are available at the airport and most hotels, and Winnipeg Transit recommends its Navigo trip planner for bus routes (2026 full cash fare $3.45 in Canadian dollars, checked 26 October 2026). Check the airport's own page for current options and journey times.

When can you see the Narcisse Snake Dens?

Travel Manitoba says tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes emerge in the first two weeks of May and return to their dens in early September, staying visible until cool weather forces them underground. The Narcisse tour page says the tour runs year-round but the dens are most active in May and September, so a late-autumn or winter date is outside that season.

Do I need a park permit for Grand Beach or Elk Island?

Manitoba Parks requires motor vehicles in provincial parks to display a valid park vehicle permit; the 2026 daily permit is $9.50 in Canadian dollars including GST (checked 26 October 2026), and none is needed on foot or by bicycle. It lists 1 to 28 February 2027 as free. Ask us in your quote request whether a permit is covered on your tour.

What do visitors need to enter Canada to visit Winnipeg?

Visa-exempt foreign nationals need an eTA to fly to or transit through a Canadian airport, but not to arrive by car, bus, train or boat. US citizens are exempt from the eTA and must carry proper identification such as a valid US passport, according to IRCC. Entry rules change, so check the Government of Canada's pages before you travel.
