A private day trip to the world's largest concentration of garter snakes and Manitoba's rare alvar landscape.
Visit the world-famous Narcisse Snake Dens and hike the rare alvar habitat of the Clarence Tillenius Trail on this private day trip through Manitoba's Interlake karst country.
A full-day private tour to the Narcisse Wildlife Management Area, home to the largest concentration of snakes on the planet, where thousands of harmless red-sided garter snakes overwinter in limestone crevices. The route passes through Manitoba's karst topography en route, with a guided hike along the Clarence Tillenius Trail through a rare alvar habitat, a photo stop at the S-s-sam & S-s-sara statue in Inwood, and lunch at a local restaurant. Snake activity is genuinely seasonal, peaking during the spring emergence in May and the autumn return in September — the tour runs year-round, but the dens themselves are most active during those windows.

The Narcisse Snake Dens, in a provincial wildlife management area north of Narcisse, are the winter home of tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes and are known as the largest concentration of this species anywhere. The population was roughly 70,000 until severe weather in 1999 killed tens of thousands before they reached their dens, and it has been recovering since.
Garter snakes here are harmless to people and survive Manitoba's cold by sheltering underground in limestone sinkholes and fissures, a feature of the Interlake's karst terrain. In spring, males emerge first and wait for females, creating the writhing mating balls that draw visitors, while the autumn return to the dens is quieter. Timing matters, and your driver can advise on the current week's activity.
On the way, the town of Inwood has two giant garter snake statues named S-s-sam and S-s-sara, completed in 1985; the larger is about 25 feet long. They are a lighthearted photo stop on a tour that is otherwise about patient, quiet nature watching.
