Elk Island Provincial Park is small and unusually wild: roughly 900 hectares including a mainland spit and a nine-square-kilometre island just over a kilometre offshore, with no road access to the island itself. Its mix of open sand beaches, limestone outcrops and glacial debris is typical of the Lake Winnipeg shoreline before development reached it, which is why the day feels remote despite being a few hours from the city.
Lake Winnipeg is commonly ranked among the world's largest freshwater lakes, with sources placing it around 10th or 11th, and it is the third-largest lake fully inside Canada. Its shoreline changes from boreal forest and sand cliffs in the north to long beaches in the south, and this tour touches both ends of that range.
Grand Beach caps the day with about three kilometres of fine silica sand backed by dunes up to 12 metres high. On the drive back, you pass the Red River Floodway, a 47-kilometre channel built between 1962 and 1968 after the 1950 Red River flood and nicknamed Duff's Ditch for the premier who pushed it through. It has saved the city from major flood damage since.
