Manitoba's hydro story begins on the Winnipeg River. The Pinawa Dam began operating in 1906 as the province's first year-round hydroelectric station, built over about three years largely with horses, steam power and manual labour to supply Winnipeg. It was shut in 1951 so the river's full flow could feed the Seven Sisters Generating Station, and today the ruins sit inside Pinawa Dam Provincial Park, with water running through the broken concrete as rapids.
Seven Sisters came online in 1931 with a capacity of about 150 megawatts and was one of several stations that followed along the river through the mid-20th century. Seeing the old and the new plant on the same day shows how much the generating technology changed in a generation.
The route also marks the change in geology as you leave the flat glacial lakebed around Winnipeg and reach the Canadian Shield, with bare granite, boreal forest and cold, dark water. Whitemouth Falls and the Pinawa suspension bridge over a granite channel give the day some easy walking and a chance to stretch your legs.
