The Royal Tyrrell Museum opened in 1985 about 6 km northwest of Drumheller and holds more than 130,000 fossils. The valley's early fossil story begins with geologist Joseph B. Tyrrell, who found the skull of a meat-eating dinosaur, later named Albertosaurus sarcophagus, near Kneehills Creek in the 1880s.
Drumheller was also a coal town: after the discovery of coal here in 1911, over 130 mines operated in the valley. Above town, the World's Largest Dinosaur stands about 26 metres (86 feet) high and has 106 stairs to its viewing platform. The hoodoos nearby are sandstone pillars on a shale base, capped by a harder stone.
