Fort Calgary began in 1875 as a North-West Mounted Police outpost at the meeting of the Bow and Elbow rivers, built to curb American whisky traders and to build relations with Indigenous peoples. It was first called Fort Brisebois, after its first commander, and was renamed Fort Calgary in June 1876 after a Scottish castle Assistant Commissioner James Macleod had visited. The site became a National Historic Site in 1925.
Prince's Island Park, about 20 hectares, was an accident of industry: Peter Prince's Eau Claire Lumber Company dug a channel to float logs to its mill, and the channel eventually cut a piece of land free from the shore. The Prince family donated it to the city in 1947. The Calgary Tower, completed in 1968, rises 191 metres and was once Canada's tallest structure.
