Calgary to Banff is about 127 km and roughly an hour and a half by road, so day one reaches the mountains quickly. Lake Louise is named for Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, a daughter of Queen Victoria, and Johnston Canyon's catwalks were built after the Camp family founded the resort area there in 1927. The Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain opened in 1959.
Day two swings east into the Badlands. Wayne was once a coal town of about 2,500 people with 12 active mines nearby; its Rosedeer Hotel opened in 1913, and the town now has about 30 residents, reached over bridges crossing the Rosebud River (9 of the famed 11 on the way from Drumheller). The Royal Tyrrell Museum has held its fossils since 1985.
