The Calgary Tower opened on June 30, 1968, as the Husky Tower, part of an urban renewal plan tied to Canada's centennial, and was renamed the Calgary Tower in 1971. At 191 metres it was Canada's tallest structure when it opened.
A few blocks away, Arts Commons occupies an entire city block and is one of the three largest arts centres in Canada, home to six resident companies. Wonderland, the 12-metre bent-wire head of a young girl by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, anchors the plaza of The Bow office tower and was commissioned by Encana in a joint program with Cenovus.
