The Barley Belt is a cluster of craft breweries in Calgary's southeast, in the Manchester Industrial, Highfield and Alyth-Bonnybrook areas between roughly 34th and 46th Avenues and 1st and 11th Streets. Local reports describe the idea of branding the district as growing out of the brewers' collaborative culture, with the seed planted during a Jane's Walk.
The boom behind it is recent. Alberta removed minimum production requirements in 2013 (previously a brewer had to produce 500,000 litres a year to sell commercially), and small and nano breweries multiplied afterward. Before that, Alberta had only about a dozen breweries.
