Costa Verde is the name given to the roughly 20-kilometer strip of coastline that runs beneath Lima's cliffside districts, including Miraflores, San Isidro, Magdalena del Mar, and San Miguel. The cliffs themselves drop around 80 meters from the clifftop malecón (boardwalk) down to the Costa Verde highway and the Pacific shoreline below — a dramatic vertical backdrop that makes this one of the more striking urban coastlines in South America, and a reliable launch point for paragliding.
The flight itself is tandem: you're harnessed in alongside a licensed instructor pilot, who controls the glider while you take in the view. Miraflores' clifftops are popular with local paragliding operators specifically because the exposed cliff face generates steady onshore thermal and ridge-lift currents through much of the day, which is what keeps tandem flights reliably airborne for a typical 10 to 20 minutes rather than a much shorter glide. Exact launch points shift along the cliff top depending on wind direction on the day, generally somewhere close to the Miraflores malecón.
From the air, you'll pass over some of Lima's wealthier seaside neighborhoods — Miraflores' own clifftop parks, San Isidro's skyline, and the coastline stretching toward Magdalena del Mar and San Miguel — all with the Pacific Ocean on one side. This stretch of coast has been used by fishing communities since pre-Columbian times, though the modern Costa Verde highway and the clifftop parks and boardwalks are a more recent addition, built up gradually over the 20th century as Miraflores and its neighboring districts grew into Lima's main recreational waterfront.
