This half-day tour opens at Lima's Plaza de Armas (also called Plaza Mayor), the square Francisco Pizarro laid out when he founded the city on January 18, 1535. It's been the political and religious heart of Lima ever since, ringed by the Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the Archbishop's Palace, and it forms the core of the Historic Centre of Lima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.
Next comes the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, a mid-16th-century complex whose underground catacombs served as one of Lima's main cemeteries until around 1810. Forgotten for more than a century, the catacombs were only rediscovered in 1943; sources differ on exactly how many people are buried there, with figures ranging from roughly 25,000 well into the tens of thousands, and the bones are arranged in wells as deep as 10 meters, some in deliberate geometric patterns.
The tour closes at Parque del Amor (Love Park), a clifftop park overlooking the Pacific built around 'El Beso' ('The Kiss'), a large sculpture by Peruvian artist Víctor Delfín depicting himself and his wife in an embrace. Delfín, now in his 90s, is widely regarded as one of Peru's most significant painters and sculptors, and the park's winding, colorfully tiled walls — carrying quotes about love in a style often compared to Antoni Gaudí's Park Güell in Barcelona — have made it one of Miraflores' most photographed spots.
