Chilca is a coastal district in Cañete Province, roughly 65 kilometers (about 40 miles) south of Lima — close enough that the drive down the Pan-American Highway typically takes somewhere around an hour, not the four-to-five-hour trip required to reach Peru's better-known desert destination, the Huacachina oasis near Ica, some 300 kilometers further south. That's the real distinction this tour is built around: a genuine sand-dune adventure that fits into half a day rather than requiring an overnight trip.
The dunes themselves are part of a much larger phenomenon: a long, nearly unbroken strip of coastal desert that runs along most of Peru's Pacific shoreline. It exists because of a rare combination of geography — the cold Humboldt Current offshore suppresses the evaporation that would otherwise produce rain, while the Andes to the east block any moisture arriving from the Amazon basin. The result is one of the driest non-polar regions on Earth, and along stretches like Chilca, wind-driven sand has built up into the rolling dune fields used for sandboarding and off-roading today.
Sandboarding here follows the same basic technique used anywhere in the world: a waxed board, a controlled run down the dune face, and a short instructional session beforehand so first-timers get a feel for balance and braking before tackling a full-sized dune. A stretch of off-roading across the dune field in a 4x4 is typically built into the day alongside the boarding itself.
