Palccoyo is a genuinely separate site from the famous Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain — a real, distinct mineral-striped landscape in its own right, not a lesser copy of it. Its viewpoint sits at around 4,900 meters (roughly 16,070 feet), about 300 meters lower than Vinicunca's summit, and rather than a single peak, Palccoyo is actually made up of three separate colored hills, striped in reds, greens, golds, and whites from the same kind of layered mineral deposits responsible for Vinicunca's colors.
The real draw of Palccoyo is how much easier it is to reach: the walk from the trailhead to the main viewpoints is typically only 30 to 45 minutes each way over mostly flat ground, compared to the multi-hour, genuinely steep climb required at the main Rainbow Mountain. That shorter, gentler route also tends to draw far fewer visitors, so you're less likely to be sharing the viewpoint with large groups. Along the short walk, you'll also pass the site locally known as the Stone Forest, and on clear days you can see the snow-capped peak of Ausangate in the distance.
A hot lunch is included as part of the day, along with a brief stop at an Inca ruin on the drive back to Cusco — a worthwhile add-on to round out a day that's otherwise centered on the mountain itself.
Because this is a genuinely easier hike at a lower altitude than the classic Vinicunca route, Palccoyo is often the better choice if you're short on acclimatization time, traveling with kids or older family members, or simply prefer a shorter walk without giving up the real mineral-striped scenery.
