Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, this is a private helicopter flight.
The flight itself is about one hour, with additional time for transfer to and from the helipad.
Yes, like any flight, this can be affected by weather conditions, and your operator may need to adjust timing accordingly.
Poás's ground-level crater overlook is subject to real restrictions — rangers have at times capped visits to around 20 minutes because of sulfur dioxide gas, and the park has closed outright during periods of heightened volcanic activity in recent years. A helicopter flight gives you a full aerial view of both the active crater and the separate, cooler Botos Lagoon without being limited by ground trail access.
Poás's main crater is roughly 1.5 kilometers across and about 300 meters deep, making it one of the largest and most accessible active craters in the world, and it holds Laguna Caliente, one of the most acidic natural lakes on Earth.

About This Tour

Poás's main crater is one of the largest and most accessible active volcanic craters on Earth — roughly 1.5 kilometers across and about 300 meters deep. At the bottom sits Laguna Caliente, a crater lake with a pH below 1, making it one of the most acidic natural bodies of water anywhere, kept near-boiling by the fumaroles feeding it. Geologists have logged more than 50 distinct eruptive events at Poás over its recorded history, most of them sudden, steam-driven phreatic blasts rather than slow lava flows.

A short distance from the active crater sits a very different sight: Laguna Botos, a cold, still lake roughly 370 meters across, filling an extinct crater and ringed by dense, green cloud forest. From the ground, the two craters feel like separate hikes; from the air, the contrast is immediate — a barren, steaming, pale crater beside a calm green one, both carved out of the same mountain.

Ground visits to Poás have real limits that a helicopter flight sidesteps. In recent years, park rangers have at times capped time at the crater overlook to roughly 20 minutes because of sulfur dioxide exposure, and the park has closed outright during stretches of heightened volcanic unrest, including periods between 2019 and 2025. None of that restricts a flight overhead — your pilot can circle at a safe distance and give you the full view of both craters and the surrounding Central Valley, regardless of what trail access looks like that day, though like any flight it still depends on the weather itself.
