Manuel Antonio was established as a national park in 1972 and covers just 16.24 square kilometers of land — the smallest national park in Costa Rica's entire system — yet it's consistently one of the most visited, because almost nowhere else in the country packs pristine beach, coral reef, and both primary and secondary rainforest into such a compact, easily walkable area. That density is exactly what a half-day of trail walking here can cover, something a much larger park simply can't offer in the same timeframe.
Because the park draws such heavy demand on a small footprint, Costa Rica's park service limits daily visitor numbers and closes the park one day each week to let the trails rest — a closure day that shifted from Monday to Tuesday back in 2021, which still catches some visitors off guard if they're going off older information. The exact daily visitor cap has been adjusted more than once in recent years by court order, generally trending toward tighter limits than the park saw a decade ago, part of a broader effort to balance tourism against the ecosystem it depends on.
The payoff for that management is real: Manuel Antonio is one of the only places in Costa Rica where the vulnerable Central American squirrel monkey can reliably be spotted, alongside white-faced capuchins and mantled howler monkeys, all living in a forest that opens directly onto the sand at Espadilla and Manuel Antonio beaches.
