Café Britt was founded in 1985 by American entrepreneur Steve Aronson, at a time when nearly all of Costa Rica's best coffee beans were shipped out of the country green and roasted elsewhere. Britt became the first Costa Rican company to roast, brand, and sell gourmet coffee under its own name both domestically and abroad, a real shift in a national industry that had spent more than a century focused almost entirely on exporting raw beans. In 1991 the company staged what's recognized as Costa Rica's first dedicated coffee tour, originally built around a live, theatrical walk-through rather than a straightforward lecture — a format that's evolved over the decades but still shapes how the visit is structured today.
More than 50,000 people take the Britt tour each year, and over half a million have gone through it since it began, making it one of the most-visited coffee experiences in the country. Rather than running a single massive estate, Café Britt partners with a network of growers across the Central Valley and roasts the beans centrally under its own brand — but the Heredia property used for this tour keeps a working stand of coffee plants specifically for the walking portion, so what you see on the ground is a genuine, planted demonstration plot, not a staged backdrop.
The visit covers the full chain from plant to cup: how coffee cherries are picked and sorted, the roasting process that determines flavor, and a tasting at the end, before the buffet lunch at the estate's own restaurant. Costa Rica's Central Valley owes its reputation for arabica coffee to the region's volcanic soil and elevation, both of which this tour touches on as part of the history, not just the mechanics of a modern roasting operation.
