Poás is a stratovolcano built up over roughly 500,000 years of layered lava flows, ash, and pyroclastic material, part of Costa Rica's Central Volcanic Range formed by the Cocos Plate sliding beneath the Caribbean Plate. Its main crater is often cited as one of the largest volcanic craters in the world, around 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) across and nearly 300 meters (985 feet) deep — a scale that's hard to fully appreciate from photos alone. More than 40 eruptions have been documented since 1828, most of them phreatic events — sudden, geyser-like bursts of steam and water from the crater's own lake rather than classic lava flows.
What makes the summit genuinely unusual is that it holds two very different crater lakes side by side. The active crater contains Laguna Caliente, a geothermally heated lake with a pH near zero — by some measurements the second-most acidic natural lake on Earth, after Kawah Ijen in Indonesia. A short distance away sits Laguna Botos, occupying an older, extinct crater that last erupted roughly 7,500 years ago; its water is cold, fresh, and ringed by cloud forest, and it's this calmer crater and its lookout that the walking portion of this tour explores.
The surrounding highlands sit high enough in elevation that the climate runs noticeably cooler than most of tropical Costa Rica, which is exactly why strawberries — a crop more associated with temperate regions — do well here. Small, family-run farms in the area have grown them as a sideline to traditional dairy and vegetable farming for generations, and the hand-picking and tasting on this tour is a direct look at that smaller-scale, non-commercial side of Costa Rican agriculture, a contrast to the volcano's raw geology earlier in the day.
