Tortuguero takes its name from the Spanish word for turtle, and it's one of the most important nesting sites for the green sea turtle anywhere in the Western Hemisphere — in a strong season, as many as 50,000 green turtle nests have been recorded on its beaches. That population recovery didn't happen on its own: it traces back to protection and research work pioneered in Tortuguero in the late 1950s, decades of conservation effort that's credited with a documented population increase of more than 400% between 1971 and 2003 alone. Green turtles nest here from roughly mid-July through mid-October, while leatherbacks — the largest living sea turtle species — nest earlier, from March through May.
The park itself is reachable only by boat or small plane; there's no road in, which is a large part of why its canal system and surrounding rainforest have stayed so intact. The network of calm, tree-lined waterways is often compared to a miniature version of the Amazon, and it's this canal system — not the nesting beaches themselves, which require a separately arranged, certified night guide during turtle season — that this private day tour explores by boat, alongside a rainforest nature walk and a stop in Tortuguero village.
Along the canals, sightings of sloths, toucans, caimans, and several monkey species are common enough that your guide will actively watch for them, though as with any wild, free-roaming wildlife, nothing can be promised on a given day.
