Monteverde's story starts not with tourism but with a small group of American Quaker families who settled here in 1951. They'd left the United States as conscientious objectors — several of their young men had been jailed for refusing to register for the draft during the Korean War — and chose Costa Rica partly because the country had just abolished its army in 1949. They bought roughly 1,400 hectares of highland forest, named it Monteverde ('green mountain'), and deliberately set aside about a third of the land to protect the watershed of the Guácimal River, a conservation ethic that shaped everything that came after, including the area's well-known cheese factory, founded in 1952.
The cloud forest reserve itself came two decades later, established in 1972 by biologist George Powell together with Quaker settler Wilford Guindon, specifically to protect the forest rather than farm it. Today the reserve and the surrounding protected area cover more than 10,500 hectares straddling the Continental Divide at around 1,400 to 1,800 meters elevation, where moist air rising off the Caribbean side condenses into the near-constant mist that gives a cloud forest its name — and supports an extraordinary density of life, with more than 400 recorded bird species, over 100 mammal species, and some 2,500 plant species including upward of 300 kinds of orchid.
Monteverde is also where the golden toad — a small, strikingly orange amphibian found nowhere else — was last confirmed in the wild in 1989, after its population collapsed from over a thousand breeding adults just a couple of years earlier to a single individual. It's often cited as one of the first species extinctions linked to a changing climate, though researchers still debate exactly how much a warming, drying climate versus a fungal disease was to blame. Traveling off the main trails by 4x4, as this tour does, is as much about reaching quieter corners of that same forest as it is about avoiding the crowds at the more famous reserve entrances.
