Roatán Butterfly Garden

A small, netted tropical garden in West End where dozens of native butterfly species fly freely among flowering plants, alongside exhibits on their life cycle. It's a quiet, low-key stop compared to the island's larger wildlife parks, and a genuine favorite for a short, unhurried visit.

About Roatán Butterfly Garden

The Roatan Butterfly Garden is a small walk-through butterfly house and tropical garden at West End on the island of Roatan, in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Visitors walk among free-flying butterflies, flowering plants and fruit trees, and see a few tropical birds.

The Butterfly House

Frommer's describes a self-guided walk-through enclosure of about 278 square metres, where visitors receive a small chart for identifying around 30 butterfly species and tropical plants. Other sources give different counts, for example about 20 species in an enclosure of roughly 3,000 square feet, so the exact numbers are uncertain. A visitor guide on Baysider lists species including the common owl, zebra, helicopter, firecracker, Julia, sunset longwing, monarch and queen. Visitors are often shown interpretive signs explaining the native species and the lifecycle of a butterfly, and a guided tour is reported to take about an hour. In damp weather butterflies can be harder to spot.

Gardens and Fruit Trees

The Baysider listing describes shaded walkways with benches among a wide range of plants. The trees include cashew, mango, hog plum, papaya, tamarind, banana, key lime, sugar cane and breadfruit. The plantings include more than 25 varieties of hibiscus, along with crotons, heliconias, philodendron, orchids, jasmine, ginger, ti plants, pentas, lantanas and parrot flowers. Many of these are the sort of nectar plants that draw hummingbirds and butterflies.

Birds

The garden is home to many hummingbirds and a small collection of parrots, macaws and toucans, which the listing says were acquired as rescue birds. Frommer's mentions a few cages of Honduran native birds such as toucans. Tour operators group the stop with other wildlife visits on the western end of the island.

Location

Baysider places the garden in West End, about a five-minute walk from the main entrance to West End Village, and Frommer's says it lies just before the entrance to West End along the main road. West End is the dive and village hub on the western tip of Roatan. Opening arrangements, admission and the garden's current operating status are not covered here and should be confirmed with the operator before any visit.

Roatan and Its Wildlife

Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands, lying about 65 km off the Honduran coast and measuring roughly 59 km long, according to Wikipedia. It sits on the southern edge of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System and is part of an Important Bird Area that supports white-crowned pigeons, chimney swifts and yellow-naped amazons. Most of its cruise-port and resort traffic is concentrated at the west end, which is why gardens and wildlife stops cluster there.

Visiting in a Private Group

The garden suits a short stop on a private west-end tour. A private guided visit with a vehicle and driver lets travellers pair it with West Bay Beach and other nearby attractions, without handling separate transfers.
