Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach)

Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach) is a secluded cove tucked beside El Arco, accessible only by boat or kayak, where the calm Sea of Cortez side of the beach faces the rougher 'Divorce Beach' surf on the Pacific side just a few steps away. It's a standard stop on nearly every glass-bottom boat and snorkeling tour departing Cabo San Lucas marina.

About Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach)

Playa del Amor, known in English as Lover's Beach, is a small cove at Land's End at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It sits beside the rock arch of El Arco and is reached by water, not by road.

A cove beside the arch

According to English Wikipedia, Lover's Beach lies on the calmer Sea of Cortez side of the arch, while Divorce Beach is on the rougher Pacific side. The arch is a granitic formation at the very tip of the peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean becomes the Gulf of California, and Wikipedia describes it as three stories tall, about 61 metres in elevation, and shaped by natural erosion. The granite of Los Cabos formed about 115 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. Some travel sites call the arch limestone, but the Wikipedia description of granite is the better supported.

Getting there

The beach is reached by water taxi, kayak or boat tour from the marina or Medano Beach, as the cove is enclosed by rock. Wikipedia notes that reaching the arch by land involves climbing large rocks and that landing with small watercraft can be dangerous when the sea is running, with water levels changing significantly. Staying close to the sides of the arch is not recommended.

A protected seascape

The point lies within the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area, which Spanish Wikipedia says was decreed in 1973 (sources give differing August and November dates) and covers about 3,996 hectares, roughly 95 percent of it sea. That article calls El Arco the emblem of the protected area. It also lists more than 800 species of plants and animals, a sea lion colony of more than 30 animals, and visits by humpback, gray and blue whales for breeding, and notes that the protection area belongs to the UNESCO site Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California.

Wildlife and setting

English Wikipedia describes the rocks around El Arco as a popular gathering place for sea lions. Waters in the protected area hold marlin, sailfish, swordfish, dorado, yellowfin tuna and yellow snapper according to the Spanish article, which also lists sea turtles among the reptiles recorded. The climate is hot desert, with summer sea temperatures of about 28 to 29 degrees Celsius.

A contrast of two coasts

The informal names Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach reflect the contrast between the sheltered and the exposed sides of the point. Because the Pacific side has strong waves, it is generally viewed from a distance, while the Sea of Cortez side is the calmer one.

Visiting context

Boat and sea conditions determine whether landings are possible. A private tour with a driver can cover the transfer to the marina or Medano Beach, with the boat trip itself handled by an authorized operator.
