Todos Santos is a small town on the Pacific coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, about an hour's drive north of Cabo San Lucas and an hour southwest of La Paz. Set in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna near the Tropic of Cancer, it is known for its restored colonial buildings, art galleries and surf beaches, and it holds the Mexican tourism program status of Pueblo Magico.
According to Wikipedia, Father Jaime Bravo founded the Mision Santa Rosa de las Palmas in 1723, which was renamed Nuestra Senora del Pilar de La Paz in 1724. Another source gives the mission's founding as 1733 under Sigismundo Taraval, so dates vary by account. The Pericu and Guaycura peoples were the area's inhabitants before the Jesuits, and a continuous water supply from the Sierra de la Laguna allowed crops to be grown in the oasis. The statue of the Virgin of Pilar remains the focus of the town's main festival in November.
After the missions were secularized in the 19th century, Todos Santos became Baja's sugarcane capital, with eight sugar mills at the end of that century. The last mill closed in 1965, after the freshwater spring dried up in 1950. The spring returned in 1981, and when the Mexican government paved Highway 19 in the mid-1980s it brought tourists. Farming, fishing and ranching now support the town alongside tourism.
Pueblo Magico is a Mexican federal tourism program begun in 2001 that promotes towns of cultural and historical interest, and Los Cabos Magazine reports that Todos Santos received the status in 2006. The town is known for its arts and surfing, and its historic center has galleries and restored buildings. The Hotel California draws visitors because of its name and the Eagles song of the same name, though the song does not specifically reference it; the Eagles sued in 2017 and the case settled in 2018, and the hotel says it has no connection to the song or the band.
The town sits at the Tropic of Cancer, and Wikipedia gives mean daily highs of about 25 degrees Celsius in winter to about 32 degrees in August, with annual precipitation of about 210 millimeters, mostly in August and September. Wikipedia reports a population of 7,185 at the 2020 census, making it the second-largest town in La Paz Municipality.
The town is compact and walkable, with the surf beaches a short drive outside. A private tour with a driver is a convenient way to visit from Cabo San Lucas, covering the town and the Pacific coast without needing to arrange separate transport.
