A pedestrian alpine village and mountain resort about an hour from Kamloops, one of British Columbia's best-known ski destinations.
Visitor guide
Sun Peaks Resort is a ski and mountain resort about 55 km northeast of Kamloops, British Columbia, built around a pedestrian village. It markets itself as Canada's second-largest ski area and operates in both winter and summer.
Sun Peaks spreads across Tod Mountain, Sundance Mountain and Mount Morrisey, with Orient Ridge as a fourth area. Wikipedia lists 144 trails, an 882 m vertical and 4,270 acres of skiable terrain, but the resort's current figures differ (about 4,400 acres and an 896 m vertical in one 2025-26 table), and summit elevation is given as 2,080 m or 2,152 m. Treat all numbers as approximate and check the resort for current stats. Most sources report 13 lifts, and the resort's own listing includes Nordic trails of roughly 37 km, mostly on Mount Morrisey. Wikipedia also cites roughly 5.6 m of average annual snowfall and more than 2,000 hours of sunshine, figures that come from resort-style promotion and should be taken as approximate.
Wikipedia says Donald Whyte and Donald Munro spotted Tod Mountain in 1958, while the resort's own timeline says five Kamloops locals explored it in 1959 and that Tod Mountain resort opened in November 1961. A 1968 fire closed the lift until 1970-71, and ownership changed hands several times: Tod Mountain Recreation formed in 1972, Peter Pocklington bought into it in 1974, and it entered receivership in 1976 before a Calgary-based group bought it in 1978. Nippon Cable and Ecosign purchased the resort in 1992 and it was renamed Sun Peaks in 1993 after a ballot contest ('Tod' is German for death), followed by village-building and lift expansion. The Village of Sun Peaks was incorporated in June 2010 and had 1,404 residents in 2021, with more than 900 non-resident property owners.
The resort sits in Secwépemc territory, and Wikipedia notes that since 1999 Secwépemc land defenders have opposed its expansion on grounds of Aboriginal title. This is a disputed matter.
Wikipedia traces the build-out: the Sunburst Express high-speed quad replaced a double chair in 1993, the Sundance Express was upgraded in 1995, the Morrisey Express opened in 2002 to extend skiing onto Mount Morrisey, the Elevation quad opened in 2006 with a race centre, and the Orient lift opened in 2018 to serve East Village homes. It also reports the Crystal triple was replaced by a quad in 2020-21 and a West Bowl Express opened for the 2024-25 season. Development of a large alpine village began in the late 1990s, designed as a ski-in community with residential and guest accommodation.
Racing has a long history here: Wikipedia says Canadian Masters National Alpine races have been held since 1986, and the Austrian national ski team signed a five-year training contract in 2005 ahead of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Olympic champion Nancy Greene Raine is listed as the resort's Director of Skiing.
In winter Sun Peaks offers alpine and Nordic skiing, tubing and the ski-through village. Wikipedia says tubing opened in 2003. In summer the resort advertises mountain biking, hiking, golf, alpine sightseeing and tennis, with paddling on McGillivray Lake. The bike park has hosted provincial and national downhill championships, according to Wikipedia, and an 18-hole golf course opened in 2005 at over 1,200 m elevation, described there as the highest in BC. The summer season and chairlift schedule changes by year.

Kamloops Lake, the BC Wildlife Park and the Secwépemc Museum are on the Kamloops side. A Voyzo private tour with your own driver means nobody has to drive the mountain road, and pickup is door-to-door.
