A private day trip from Kamloops through the Thompson region to Sun Peaks Resort, one of British Columbia's best-known mountain villages, with time to explore on foot, a nature walk, and — depending on the season — the Adams River salmon run.
Sun Peaks lies about 55 kilometres northeast of Kamloops, on the slopes of what was originally called Tod Mountain. Two Kamloops skiers, Donald Whyte and Donald Munro, noticed the mountain in 1958 and began exploring it in 1959, and the resort village that grew from that interest is now one of Western Canada's largest ski areas. In summer the pedestrian-only village is quieter, with hiking and views over the Thompson region.
The Adams River salmon run is the season-dependent extra. Sockeye spawn in the Adams River in Tsútswecw Provincial Park, a 1,076-hectare park renamed from Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park in 2018, and every fourth year is a dominant run with millions of fish. Even in off years, a smaller run happens in October. Your driver can tell you whether the timing works for your date, since the river is a different drive from Sun Peaks.
The route climbs out of the semi-arid Kamloops valley into forest and alpine meadow, a quick lesson in how elevation changes the landscape in this part of British Columbia. Bring layers; the village is noticeably cooler than the city.
