About Scandinave Spa Whistler

Scandinave Spa Whistler is an outdoor Nordic-style spa a few minutes from Whistler Village, set in forest with Coast Mountain views. It is built around thermal bathing in alternating hot, cold and rest stages rather than conventional treatments, and it is part of a Canadian spa group.

The group

Scandinave Spa was founded in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, in 1999. The group's own anniversary material lists its other destinations as Blue Mountain in Ontario (2006), Old Montreal (2009) and Whistler (2010), and states the Whistler spa was timed for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Vincent Damphousse, a former NHL player, is named in the group's material as owner and executive chairman, and he described the 1999 investment as a bet on an emerging market for wellness through thermotherapy. The group marked its 25th anniversary in November 2024. A travel article written shortly after the Whistler opening described it as a 20,000-square-foot Nordic spa on about three acres near Lost Lake and Spruce Grove parks; a 2013 article added that it had 13 massage rooms, a health bistro and a boutique.

A contrast of settings

The group's sites are deliberately different in character. In an interview marking the group's 15th anniversary, Damphousse described the Old Montreal spa as an indoor urban spa, a deliberate contrast to the rustic outdoor setting of Mont-Tremblant, converted from a more than century-old building under architect Gilles Saucier. Whistler follows the outdoor model, and the spa describes itself as a nature spa among old-growth rainforest, with a fire pit area for resting.

The Nordic roots

The bathing routine draws on Scandinavian and Finnish traditions. The word sauna is of Finnish origin, and Finnish sauna culture was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2020. In a traditional Finnish sauna, water thrown on hot stones makes steam called loyly, and when the heat becomes too much, bathers customarily cool off in a lake, the sea, a pool or a shower, or in winter by rolling in snow or swimming through a hole cut in lake ice. They usually complete two or three heat-and-cooling cycles lasting from 30 minutes to two hours in total. The Whistler spa's cold baths, Nordic waterfall and outdoor fireplaces echo that pattern of heating, cooling and resting.

The thermal circuit

The spa describes its thermal journey as three alternating stages: heat, cold and rest. Published descriptions of the spa list eucalyptus steam baths, wood-burning Finnish saunas, outdoor hot baths with a waterfall feature, a Nordic waterfall, cold baths and showers, solariums, hammocks and outdoor fireplaces. The spa recommends three to four cycles of about 45 minutes each, and guests can move at their own pace; the spa gives a typical visit as three to five hours. Later additions have included a dry sauna, a eucalyptus steam room with rain shower and a yoga studio.

Quiet and no phones

Silence is described as the spa's golden rule everywhere on site, with the bistro the one place where quiet conversation is welcome. Electronic devices stay in lockers for the whole visit as a form of digital detox. The spa sets its own minimum age and supervision rules for younger guests, and these have changed over time, so check the spa before you book.

Massage

The spa offers massage by registered massage therapists or massage technicians, including Swedish, restorative and deep tissue treatments. Bookings, prices and policies change, so use the spa's own site.

Health note

Alternating heat and cold is a traditional practice, but it is not suitable for everyone. Anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, pregnancy or other health concern should ask a doctor first, and drink water between cycles.

Getting there

The spa is on Mons Road, a few minutes by road from Whistler Village, on the shared territory of the Lil'wat and Squamish nations. A private vehicle and driver from Voyzo can take you there door to door from Vancouver or your Whistler accommodation and wait or return at a set time. Check the spa for current hours, reservations and access.
