Visitor guide
Niagara Helicopters is a sightseeing helicopter operator based at 3731 Victoria Avenue, at the Niagara River Parkway, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Its standard flight lasts about 9 minutes and covers 27 kilometres, and the operator allows about 12 minutes per ride including boarding and photos. It describes itself as a year-round attraction that flies daily from 9 am, weather permitting, and as a walk-in attraction where reservations are not necessary for its own flights (the operator's website, read on 25 October 2026).
The operator describes its Classic Tour as lifting off from the Victoria Avenue heliport, passing the Sir Adam Beck generating plant and the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, and following the Niagara River over the Whirlpool and the Whirlpool Rapids. The flight then passes the Rainbow Bridge, Queen Victoria Park, the American Falls and the Skylon Tower, curves along the Horseshoe Falls and returns to base. The operator adds that on a clear day you can see the outline of Toronto to the north and the shores of Lake Erie to the south. It says the route is set with Transport Canada and calls the airspace over the Falls among the most restricted in the world, so the helicopter flies the published route rather than a route chosen by passengers. A revised flight path agreed with Transport Canada in 2014 has been in effect since January 2015.
Niagara Helicopters flies Airbus H130 helicopters, which carry seven passengers and the pilot and which the company introduced in June 2015. In February 2024 it announced an order for six more H130s to renew its fleet. It says the H130 has a lower noise signature than the Bell 407 it replaced, thanks to an enclosed tail rotor and a variable speed rotor system, and it publishes a noise abatement page describing its flight path over the city.
The operator says it has been in business for more than fifty years. According to its About Us page, the company moved to its present six-acre site in 1964, when the site was used mainly as a pilot-training base, and sightseeing tours became the principal focus after Pan-Air Helicopters bought the business in 1978. In early 1985 Niagara Helicopters Limited, under president Ruedi Hafen, began its present operation with one four-seat Bell 206 JetRanger. The fleet was replaced with Bell 407 helicopters in 1996, the company was acquired by Helicopter Transport Services in December 2011, and the Airbus H130s arrived in 2015. These dates are the operator's own account and are not independently verified here.
Niagara Helicopters says it needs a cloud base of at least 2,400 feet and visibility of at least 3 miles to take off, and that it cannot fly after dark or in low cloud. If it cannot fly in the morning it may fly later the same day. Its own walk-in flights follow a no-fly, no-pay policy. Flights leave every 2 to 10 minutes, the wait between flights can be anywhere from 1 to 30 minutes and the operator says it strives to keep it to 15 minutes or less. It needs at least two passengers per flight, says it fills its helicopters to capacity while passengers are waiting, and says that guaranteeing a private flight means paying for six seats. Seats are assigned by weight and balance, so the operator says no particular seat can be guaranteed; it publishes no weight limit, and it welcomes passengers from 1 month to 100 years of age.
The operator's 2024 accessibility plan describes a reduced curb, an accessible washroom and a ramp to the main pad, and says it has had a portable chair lift built to move guests who cannot climb into the aircraft level with their seat for the transfer. It does not say how large a mobility aid can be carried, so guests with mobility needs should confirm the details with the operator before they go. The heliport page lists free parking, a picnic and aircraft-viewing area, a gift shop and a photo lab.
