Zion was certified an International Dark Sky Park on June 3, 2021, the last of Utah's “Mighty Five” national parks to earn the designation — joining Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef as officially recognized dark-sky destinations. The certification reflects genuinely low light pollution across the region, which is what makes an evening tour built around stargazing a real, not just marketed, draw here.
This tour's format combines three distinct phases most single-activity tours don't: a sunset drive into East Zion's backcountry timed to the actual light, a campfire stop for s'mores once the sun is down, and stargazing once full darkness sets in and the Milky Way and planets become visible to the naked eye.
The route runs in a real off-road vehicle rather than a standard tour van, which is what lets this evening format reach backcountry viewpoints away from the park's main roads and their ambient light, rather than stopping at a roadside pullout.
