The Kanab area carries a documented, thousands-of-years-deep Native American presence. Ancestral Puebloan people once carved hand- and toe-holds — known as Moqui steps — into canyon walls across this region to reach slot canyons, lookout points, and storage sites, and the Southern Paiute, whose ancestral homeland this remains, created some of Utah's richest rock art here, including panels at nearby Kanab Creek Canyon tied to the Ghost Dance movement of the late 1880s. Today the federally recognized Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians still calls the wider Kanab area home. This tour's own petroglyph stop is a genuine piece of that long record — your guide is best placed to share its specific history and significance in person.
The tour's other real stop, Peekaboo Slot Canyon (also called Red Canyon locally), is carved from Navajo Sandstone by countless flash floods moving fast enough through a narrow channel to polish the stone smooth and undercut its walls into the sinuous shapes you'll walk between. The canyon sits on Bureau of Land Management land about nine miles north of Kanab — a separate destination from Zion Canyon itself, reached by UTV along sandy backroads rather than the national park's own shuttle system.
Because tours like this run on BLM backroads instead of maintained park roads, groups genuinely stay small — a detail borne out by real reviewer feedback describing trips that weren't combined with strangers, a rarer thing in a region where many slot canyon tours pool unrelated groups together.
