The Narrows is where the Virgin River has cut its narrowest, most dramatic passage through Zion's Navajo sandstone. In the famous Wall Street section, roughly two miles upstream from Riverside Walk, the canyon walls close to as little as 20 to 30 feet apart while rising more than 1,000 feet overhead.
This hike follows the real bottom-up route — starting at Riverside Walk, near the Temple of Sinawava, and wading upstream along the Virgin River itself as far as your group is comfortable before turning back. No permit is required for this direction, unlike the longer top-down route that starts at Chamberlain's Ranch.
Because there's no maintained trail bed once you leave the paved Riverside Walk — the hike is a genuine wade through the river — the included water shoes and hiking sticks aren't a nice-to-have, they're the gear that makes a multi-hour trip over cold, uneven river rock actually comfortable.
