The backroads this Jeep tour explores sit in the broader “Zion outback” — the high desert and canyon country around the park that most day visitors never see from the paved Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. The terrain here is the same Navajo sandstone and red-rock geology found inside the park, just reached by dirt roads a standard rental car typically can't handle.
The Mormon-era ghost town and cemetery this route visits reflect a genuinely real chapter of this region's settlement history. In 1861, Brigham Young called hundreds of Latter-day Saint families south to found what became known as the Cotton Mission, a string of small farming communities along the Virgin River meant to grow cotton for the church rather than rely on eastern markets — the origin of the area's nickname, Utah's Dixie. Several of these settlements, and their cemeteries, were repeatedly damaged by the Virgin River's unpredictable flash floods and were eventually abandoned, leaving behind the kind of weathered buildings and burial grounds this kind of backroad tour visits.
Covering this ground in a real 2020 Jeep Rubicon means the route can reach overlooks and historic sites genuinely off the main park roads, with your group moving through it privately rather than as part of a larger group tour.
