The drive itself is part of the day: Zion sits roughly 160 miles from Las Vegas, about 2.5 to 3 hours north on Interstate 15. The route briefly crosses the northwestern corner of Arizona — about 30 miles through what's known as the Arizona Strip, a section of Mohave County cut off from the rest of the state by the Grand Canyon — before climbing back into Utah.
That Arizona stretch runs through the Virgin River Gorge, where the interstate was built through a narrow canyon the Virgin River had already carved long before the highway existed. The gorge section, completed in 1973, is one of the more dramatic stretches of interstate highway in the country, with cliffs rising steeply on both sides of the road.
Zion itself was established as a national park in 1919, though the area was first protected a decade earlier, in 1909, under the name Mukuntuweap National Monument before being renamed ahead of its 1919 redesignation. Once inside, the park's signature feature is Zion Canyon, cut by the Virgin River through Navajo Sandstone — rock that began as wind-blown desert dunes roughly 190 million years ago.
With an optional audio guide available for the day, there's room to explore at your own pace between scheduled stops — useful on a tour built around a real full day of sightseeing rather than a tightly scripted walking tour.
