Timing a visit to a narrow sandstone slot canyon around sunrise genuinely changes what you see inside it. Early, low-angle light reaches down into Peekaboo Slot Canyon's tight passages at a flatter trajectory than midday sun, throwing longer shadows and warmer reflected color up the orange sandstone walls — part of why photographers chase specific hours of light in the Southwest's slot canyons rather than visiting at any time of day. Reaching the canyon before the crowds also means a quieter walk through its roughly 0.7-mile length.
Peekaboo — also known locally as Red Canyon — is carved from Navajo Sandstone on Bureau of Land Management land about nine miles north of Kanab, Utah, a separate destination from Zion Canyon itself. Flash floods moving through the narrow channel over thousands of years polished its walls smooth, and ancient Moqui steps — hand- and toe-holds carved by Ancestral Puebloan people — are still visible in places along the rock.
The ride out and back is aboard a Polaris ATV, with a stop at a nearby sand dune for real sandboarding — fine quartz sand eroded from that same Navajo Sandstone and tinted by iron oxide, the same geologic recipe behind the well-known Coral Pink Sand Dunes nearby. Timing both stops around sunrise means cooler sand underfoot and softer light for photos at the canyon and the dune alike.
