The sandboarding stop on this tour sits in the same geologic family as the well-known Coral Pink Sand Dunes nearby — fine, frosted quartz grains eroded from the region's roughly 180-million-year-old Navajo Sandstone, coated with a thin film of iron oxide that gives the dunes their warm, rosy color. Riding a board down a real sand slope here is a hands-on way to feel a landscape that, elsewhere in Zion itself, you can only look at from a distance.
Peekaboo Slot Canyon — also known locally as Red Canyon — is a real, narrow sandstone passage on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, about nine miles north of Kanab, Utah. It's a short, striking walk (roughly 0.7 miles round trip) between smooth orange walls shaped by centuries of flash-flood erosion, with ancient hand- and toe-holds known as Moqui steps — carved long ago by Ancestral Puebloan people to reach the canyon's higher ledges — still visible in places along the rock.
Because the canyon sits on BLM land rather than inside Zion National Park's own boundary, it has no entrance fee or shuttle system of its own; access is by high-clearance or guided off-road vehicle, which is exactly the role your private UTV plays on this tour. The result is two genuinely different Southern Utah landscapes covered in one outing — narrow carved stone and open drifting sand, both shaped by the same ancient desert dunes.
