The bottom-up Narrows hike this tour follows — starting at Riverside Walk — requires no permit, but it does carry a real, specific risk: flash floods. Because the route follows the Virgin River through a slot canyon with few places to climb to higher ground, the National Park Service closes the Narrows whenever the river's flow exceeds about 120 cubic feet per second, or whenever the National Weather Service issues a flash flood warning, and recommends checking the daily flash-flood forecast before setting out.
That's exactly what the turnaround-time monitoring built into this tour is for — your guide tracks real conditions and the time of day throughout the hike, rather than leaving a group to simply guess how far upstream is safe to go and still get back before dark or before weather turns.
The tailored pace works the same way: some groups want to wade as far as Wall Street, others are happy turning around much sooner, and the included water shoes and hiking sticks make either version of the hike manageable over the uneven, often slippery riverbed.
