Checkerboard Mesa is one of Zion National Park's most distinctive landmarks — a sandstone peak rising more than 900 feet above the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway near the park's east entrance, officially named in 1935 for the crosshatched pattern etched across its face. That pattern comes from two overlapping processes: horizontal cross-bedding left behind roughly 180 million years ago, when wind-blown sand dunes built up and collapsed layer by layer to form the Navajo Sandstone itself, combined with vertical cracks caused by more recent temperature-driven expansion and contraction of the rock, further carved out by wind and rain erosion.
This ride explores the East Zion backcountry on horseback at sunset, working toward a real viewpoint over the Cliffs of Zion near the mesa as the day's last light hits the sandstone. The ride takes place on the land bordering the park rather than inside Zion National Park itself, offering real views toward its landmarks rather than entering park trails. Horseback remains one of the oldest ways to move through this terrain — long before paved roads reached the area, it was the only way in.
Riding rather than hiking also means covering more distance to the viewpoint in less time, leaving more of the ride itself timed around the real sunset window rather than the walk to get there — a detail that matters for an experience built specifically around evening light.
