Zion's main scenic drive through the canyon has been shuttle-only for most of the year since May 2000, when the park introduced a mandatory shuttle system to deal with a real traffic problem — only about 400 parking spots existed along the road, and visitors had taken to double- and triple-parking, damaging vegetation along the canyon floor in the process. The shuttle cut an estimated 1,200 vehicle trips and roughly 11,000 vehicle miles out of the canyon almost immediately.
Riverside Walk is one of the real stops on this route — a paved, mostly flat trail that follows the Virgin River near the upper end of Zion Canyon, through a stretch where the canyon walls close in and cottonwoods along the riverbank stay shaded most of the day. It's an easy walk, but it sits at the literal start of the path into the Narrows, so it gives a genuine sense of the canyon's scale without demanding a difficult hike.
Canyon Overlook, near the park's east entrance and the Zion–Mount Carmel Tunnel, is the other named stop — a shorter trail that climbs to a viewpoint looking back down over the lower canyon, a genuinely different vantage point from anything visible along the main shuttle route.
Zion itself became a national park in 1919, after a decade as Mukuntuweap National Monument — the original 1909 designation was renamed in 1918 before Congress made the full park designation official the following year.
