Every stop on this route sits inside Navajo sandstone, the pale rock that forms most of Zion's towering walls. It began as sand dunes roughly 180 million years ago, when this part of North America was a vast, arid desert not unlike today's Sahara; over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater slowly cemented those windblown dunes into solid stone.
The canyon itself is far younger. Over the past 13 million years or so, the Virgin River has cut down through that sandstone to open up Zion Canyon — the same canyon floor the Pa'rus Trail and Riverside Walk both follow today. Upstream, inside the Narrows, that same river is still actively carving the slot deeper with every flood season.
The day's real stops trace that geology from the canyon floor to its rim. Scout's Lookout, reached via the switchbacking Walter's Wiggles trail, is a genuine viewpoint about 2 miles up from the valley floor — and it doesn't require a permit, unlike the chain-assisted final pitch beyond it to Angels Landing's actual summit. The Watchman, one of Zion's most recognizable peaks, rises near the park's south entrance and is visible from the Pa'rus Trail and the South Campground area.
